Did you know free tours are available in Washington DC? The White House, The Capitol, Supreme Court, and more! These are once-in-a-lifetime tours of our nation’s capitol landmarks. You will request these tours through your elected official. This post gives instructions for requesting these free tours in Washington DC.
Note: I will be using Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s website as an example. Your official’s website might look slightly different.
Step 1: Find Your Representative
Click here to find your representative.
Type in your ZIP code then click Find Your Rep By ZIP.
Click on the representative’s name to be taken to their website.
Step 2. Find The Tours Available
Each Representative’s page will look different. In this example, you will select Services.
Under the list of Services, you will select Tours and Tickets.
Step 3: Select Your Tours
You will select the tours that you are interested in. Some options include:
- The U.S. Capitol
- Bureau of Engraving and Printing
- National Cathedral
- Kennedy Center
- Library of Congress
- Supreme Court
- White House
Important! You must request these tours in advance. You can request your tours as early as 6 months in advance from your trip. The latest you can request tours is 3 weeks before your trip.
Step 4: Submit Your Request
Make sure you answer all questions honestly. When you are ready, select Submit Tour Request. There will be different background checks and security measures taken when you submit this form.
Step 5: Email With Your Representative’s Office
I submitted our tour request months in advance. As our trip neared, we received emails from our Congressman’s office. They will send you possible dates. For example:
- Tour of the White House Friday 4/14 at 8am or Monday 4/17 at 1pm.
Important! You will need to respond and confirm your tours. It is very important that you check your emails and respond to their emails.
Lastly: Enjoy Your Tour
Make sure you read your confirmation email thoroughly. There may be specific requirements for each tour. Example: no purses, no cameras, bring your ID, etc.
Once you have arrived to your tour, enjoy it!
