We took a family vacation to Hawaii when I was in high school. The first night we landed in Honolulu, we stayed in the Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel. We wandered down to the restaurant in the hotel: Tiki’s Grill and Bar. We ended up sitting on the patio until midnight. For us, it was 3am, if you consider the time change!
If I remember correctly, the mocktail I ordered was called the Chunky Monkey and had loads of chocolate syrup. It has been over 10 years so I doubt they still serve the Chunky Monkey.

As we planned our trip to Honolulu, I insisted we visit Tiki’s Grill and Bar once again. It was a fun memory as a young teenager and I wanted to relive it as an adult. This time, I was able to get something a little more grown-up and filled with alcohol.
View their website for hours, directions and more.
Only steps from the beach, Tiki’s Grill and Bar is easy to drop into after a day at the beach. If you want to plan your trip in advance, be sure to make a reservation and save your spot to watch the sunset.

We were exhausted after hiking Diamond Head so we stopped in for a drink. We noticed this spot was steps away from the water so we wandered in. The piña colada was our first drink since arriving in Hawaii. It felt like we had finally started our vacation.

After finishing off the Piña Coladas, we were still sore and not ready to move. We decided to get another drink, in which this time I chose a Strawberry Daiquiri. This was my first daiquiri so it felt fitting to try it along the beaches in Honolulu.
Visit their website for hours, menu information and more.
After our drinks, we hung out at the beach and in the water. The waves are just steps from Lulu’s so we were able to bounce in and out. If you are wanting to plan your trip in advance, be sure to make a reservation.

We stayed around the corner from the Alohilani Resort. One afternoon, we were looking for places with a good happy hour and stumbled across O Bar. It was a quick walk into this luxurious hotel. We found the bar and its expansive aquarium. According to their website, the correct term is “Oceanarium” and the two-story feature is 280,000 gallons. That is bigger than any swimming pool I have ever seen! We were lucky enough to see a feeding while we dined. A scuba diver swam with the fishes and was swarmed as they all went in for their food.
Our family ordered about everything on the happy hour menu. This is a list of everything we ordered:
Everything was to die for and filled us up until our next stop. Not to mention, everything we ordered was discounted on happy hour and we were able to get something for everyone.

]]>A staple of Honolulu, Duke’s Waikiki has greeted tourists for decades. My parents went to Duke’s on their honeymoon in 1987 and it has since become a family favorite. Anytime the topic of Hawaii comes up, our minds go first to Duke’s. If you are visiting Honolulu and looking for a memorable afternoon, here are 5 reasons to dine at the famous Duke’s Waikiki.

A Life Rule: If you are going to Duke’s, you have to get a Mai Tai. They have a thousand good drinks to choose from, but the experience is complete with their specialty drink.
If you are not wanting a Mai Tai, there are plenty of other options with beer, wine, virgin cocktails, and sodas.

When we stopped into Duke’s Waikiki, we were having a drink and appetizer before our sunset cruise. We needed to tread carefully as to not get sick on the boat. We chose the Panko Crusted Calamari and Sun Dried Tomato Hummus appetizers. Fun Fact: In Hawaiian, an appetizer is known as a pupus.
With a view of the ocean, you might not want to look anywhere else. But, there is more! Diamond Head is visible from many spots in Honolulu, and Duke’s is no exception. We sipped our drinks with the crater in the background.
The Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort has its pool directly outside Duke’s. In addition to the sand and water, you also have a view of the beachgoers and residents of the hotel. It is a bustling atmosphere.
Note: The area where we sat on the patio, along the water, is first-come first-serve. We dined on a Sunday afternoon and waited about twenty minutes for a table. So, be prepared to wait and stand your ground if you want one of these tables.
Make your reservation at Duke’s through Open Table.
The restaurant is named after Duke Kahanamoku, a legendary surfer from Hawaii. Everything from the name, menus, and décor is in his honor.
Duke’s Waikiki has also made history with the many people that have sat down for a cocktail. As I already mentioned, my parents came to Duke’s in 1987 on their honeymoon. It is a fun turn of events that I can now have a Mai Tai there with them.
Located inside the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort, Duke’s is on the first-floor. The restaurant and bar are located inside, with a patio outside.
Fun Fact: Duke’s Waikiki has a sister company called Hula Grill. This sister restaurant is located directly above Duke’s on the second story of Outrigger Reef Hotel.

]]>You are enjoying your vacation in Honolulu. You are starting to see why it is called the “fun island” because there is so much to do and see. Hula Grill in Waikiki sits on a second floor patio overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Enjoy a cocktail on the patio as you let the palm trees and topical weather take you in.

If you are unfamiliar with a Loco Moco, this is a life-changing moment for you. This traditional Hawaiian dish has several different variations, but it is usually a bed of rice, a meat patty, egg, served with gravy on top. We make these all the time at home and experiment with different ways to make them!
If this sounds like it is up your alley, the Hula Grill serves up a mean Loco Moco with pork and sausage. Channel your inner Hawaiian cuisine with this dish, or the several others to choose from on their menu.
There is just something about being on a patio near the water that makes me crave a cocktail. Hula Grill has a beer and wine menu along with their custom cocktails. We visited the restaurant for brunch so a mimosa was the obvious choice.

With a view of Waikiki Beach, you are surrounded by palm trees and Hawaiian air. The waves crash into the shore beside you as beach-goers mingle on the sand. Blue umbrellas line the beach for the Outrigger Resort. There is no shortage of people-watching with this amazing view.
We made a reservation in advance because we wanted seats outside. In addition, we dined when the restaurant first opened as to avoid crowds. Getting a seat near the beach made for great pictures that we still look at years later.

Hula Grill is a sister company to Duke’s Waikiki. Both restaurants are located inside the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort.

]]>When my parents are impressed by a rooftop bar, I know the trip has been a success. I was nervous going into the SKY Waikiki Rooftop. After all, I read about this spot online and it sounded too good to be true. When we showed up, we were blown away. Diamond Head sits in the background and is a feature in your pictures. SKY Waikiki Rooftop is the perfect place to sip a cocktail while enjoying your Honolulu vacation.

When you are in Hawaii, you are presented a selection of tropical cocktails. Sure, you can opt for a glass of wine or a beer, and I still support that decision. I, however, fully embrace the view and weather and choose to pair them with a fruity drink. SKY Waikiki Rooftop serves it all: mixed drinks, beer, wine, cocktails, you name it.
Reading how strong the Mai Tai looked on the menu, I choose the rum drink and never looked back. It was the perfect mid-afternoon drink and cooled me off after a long day. Not to mention, I was extremely sunburned!

We were exhausted when we showed up at SKY Waikiki Rooftop. On top of being sunburned, we were just getting back from snorkeling. Getting seated on a sectional couch outdoors was a comfortable way to spend the afternoon. Especially visiting with a group, it was nice to spread out and get a different angle of the view.
The good news is you can enjoy this rooftop patio and its accompanying view. The bad news is you have to share it. My mom was pretty bummed about the 2 hour time limit for dining. She wanted to stay much longer! While I shared the same feeling of not wanting to leave, I understand we have to share this amazing view. So, take in the fresh breeze and the glimpses of Diamond Head for the 2 hours you get.
Important! Make your reservation at SKY Waikiki Rooftop.
We were fortunate to dine at SKY Waikiki Rooftop just as the sun was beginning its descent. The sky transformed into a pink background for our pictures.
Nothing will compare to a Hawaiian sunset. Throw in a cocktail, a rooftop bar, and views of Diamond Head and there truly is no competition.
Located in the Waikiki Business Plaza, the rooftop bar is on the 19th floor. This rooftop is centrally located right next to International Market Place shopping mall. We were able to walk around the area and even did a little shopping at Kate Spade!
